Some of the myths around access and disability:
- Most people who are disabled are in wheelchairs? Wrong,
Only 6% of disabled people actually use a wheelchair and more than half actually only use the chair for traveling long distances and transferring
- My business is disability compliant. I have a wide front door and an accessible/ disabled toilet! Wrong.
Did you know that any information, leaflets, documents, menus, price list etc must be made available to customers/ users in alternative formats? These include brail, text, audio, and large print. If you have an accessible toilet but no one can access your information you could be potentially sued under the DDA ACT.
Get accessible provides the services and solutions as well as providing advice on best practice.
Here is an example of a common barrier faced by disabled people:
A business like yours, receives a call from a potential customer enquiring if the business is accessible. To which the business replies, yes.
The Potential customer visits the business premises and finds that they can enter/exit without problem and that there are accessible toilet facilities throughout the building, but the customer is visually impaired and has trouble reading any of the businesses literature/ essential information.
A possible solution to this problem could be to have the information available on the company’s web site as well as in large print or even available on audio. The customer then can visit the company fully prepared with the information they need, be it menus, prices or other products and services the business offers. The business would then be more accessible to its customers.
Remember if you don’t know about accessibility then it can be hard but with training provided by Get Accessible they can break’s down the myths and stereotypes a huge number of disabled people face every day of their lives.
Another statistic
Did you know?
7 out of 10 disabled people become disabled within their working life? That only leaves 3 in 10 who were born disabled.
By working with Get Accessible it will help your company’s understanding of how to accommodate disabled people through our training or consultancy services.
Remember many disabled people don’t have the luxury to go down the street and seek out bargains like non disabled people. When disabled people eventually find a company or supplier that are aware of slight reasonable adjustment they may need to make to accommodate them, than they will more than likely return time and time again. The customer may also tell friends family, colleagues and so on.
The facts and business case evidence substantiates this. There are11 million disabled people in the UK with a total disposable spending power of £80 Billion each year.
